How to respond to ‘Do you have any questions for us?’

I've been a tech recruiter for 19 years for giants like Google. These are the 4 questions you should ask at the end of an interview.

Let’s take a look at a helpful article by Dhritiparna Dhar, an HR specialist and tech recruiter who has previously worked with industry giants such as Yahoo, Google, Dell and Zendrive, before establishing her recruiting agency.

The article provides some great questions to ask at the end of an interview:

  1. “Can you tell me about my future team?”

Dhar says it’s important for candidates to ask about their future team.

She likes when candidates show interest in their future colleagues and the team they’ll be joining. For managerial roles, she thinks it’s good when candidates ask about the team structure and the backgrounds of their potential team members.

  2. “Is the opportunity remote or hybrid?”

Dhar appreciates when candidates ask about the work setup - whether it’s in-person, hybrid, or remote, and what the culture is like in each case. She values candidates who focus on collaboration, as it’s often challenging to succeed in most companies by working alone.

She has noticed that over the past four years, companies have become more accommodating of remote work, especially since many people have moved due to the pandemic. Questions about work setup and collaboration are now welcomed, and it’s good to be open about these topics.

  3. “What is the growth story of this particular role?”

She believes that asking about the growth potential of a role shows a candidate’s ambition. It helps the interviewer understand the candidate’s mindset and goals, like whether they want to mentor a team, advance in their career, or work on challenging projects. It also allows the hiring manager to explain how they support and develop their employees’ talents.

  4. “What are the biggest challenges the team, department, or company faces now?”

She suggests that asking about the company’s current challenges shows the candidate’s curiosity and desire to understand more about the role. This kind of information is often not included in the job description or on the company website, so it’s always fair to ask for more details.

For startups, the challenges might be related to funding, while for tech companies, it could be about transitioning to new software.

Premier Hunter Suggestions

Besides the questions mentioned in the article above, there are also some questions that can be asked during interview.

  1. If I have the opportunity to proceed to the next round of interviews, when would I receive the news at the earliest? What are the subsequent procedures?

  2. In addition to the resume I’ve submitted, given what we’ve discussed in this interview, is there any additional information or documents you’d need from me for your reference?

Remember, the suggestions above are just that - suggestions. Every interview is unique, and it’s important to stay relaxed and be yourself.
